Union Lutheran Church’s October 2026 newsletter opens with a reflection on seasons of change and new beginnings. Drawing from Ecclesiastes 3:1, Pastor Heidi Punt describes autumn as a reminder that God is continually at work, even when life is changing.

For Union, this fall carries special significance as the congregation prepares to return to its renovated sanctuary—a place not simply of beauty, but of worship, prayer, Word and Sacrament, fellowship, grief, celebration, service, and growth. As the congregation enters this new season, Pastor Heidi encourages members to carry gratitude for the past, joy in the present, and anticipation for what God will do in the future.

🍁 The renovated sanctuary represents both continuity and renewal. Changes include a relocated baptismal font, a new credence table, adjusted pew spacing, additional accessibility spaces, renewed flooring and other property improvements. The newsletter frames these changes within Union’s ongoing calling to remain centered in Christ and faithful to God’s Word.

📖 Worship, Learning & Growing Together

October brings a full schedule of worship and Christian education. Engage & Disciple continues each Sunday at 9:30 a.m., offering children and families a comprehensive journey through the story of Scripture. The four-year Engage curriculum covers both Old and New Testaments while allowing children of different ages to study the same biblical texts together. The newsletter also invites families to participate in the Joy Class, where children are encouraged to use their Bibles, ask questions, pray together, and grow in faith.

Adults and youth have additional opportunities to deepen their faith through NALC Life-to-Life Discipleship, a small-group experience built around intentional time with God and meaningful spiritual relationships with others. Catechism Kick Off begins October 7 for youth in seventh grade and above, while Bible studies explore the prophetic books of Nahum and Habakkuk, focusing on God's justice, sovereignty, human questions, suffering, and learning to trust Him.

🎶 October also welcomes members into Union's music ministry. Belles & Beaus and the Chancel Choir rehearse each Wednesday evening, with the invitation extended even to those without previous musical training. The emphasis is on a willing heart, fellowship, and enriching worship through music.

🏡 Fellowship, Service & Community Connection

October is filled with opportunities for fellowship and hands-on service. The month begins with a Fall Yard Sale benefiting the Emergency Response Team and Mission Outreach programs. Members and community participants can reserve vendor spaces, enjoy lunch and baked goods, and contribute food and supplies to make the event possible.

The Good Timers gather October 8 with Rev. Jarrod Lanning for a morning program followed by lunch at Lakeview Restaurant. The Mary & Martha Circle meets later in the month for fellowship and refreshments, while a Congregation & Community Meal brings people together on October 14. The church also hosts the Piedmont-East Clergy meeting, providing a place for pastors and church leaders from across the area to gather for fellowship, support, and collaborative planning.

October also includes the Carolinas Lutheran Women’s 16th Annual Convocation, themed “The Oil of Gladness,” with worship, activities, fellowship, and teaching centered on the healing oils and herbs of the Bible.

🤝 Mission, Outreach & Caring for Neighbors

Union's October outreach reaches both the local community and the wider region. The month's community project supports Organ Lutheran Church's Community Pantry, with members asked to provide food, refrigerated items, and toiletries for local families in need. The newsletter emphasizes practical generosity and asks that donations be provided in plastic containers whenever possible for safety.

Youth are also invited to participate in the CMR Columbia Youth Mission Day on October 24. Participants will travel to Columbia, South Carolina, to help build ramps for people in need, putting faith into action through practical service.

The congregation's broader benevolence ministry remains an important part of its mission as well. The newsletter explains that Union's annual general Benevolence goal is $28,000, with funds pooled and distributed annually to various ministries according to an established ratio. Members are encouraged either to support the general Benevolence fund or designate a specific ministry for targeted giving.

✝️ Reformation, Confirmation & Coming Home

One of October's central celebrations is Reformation & Confirmation Sunday on October 25. The newsletter describes the Lutheran Reformation as fundamentally centered on Jesus Christ, the faithful proclamation of the Gospel, and the teaching of God's Word. The day also marks an important milestone for Samuel Malachi Nguyen, who will publicly affirm the faith given to him in baptism during Confirmation.

The same Sunday includes the dedication of the renovated sanctuary space, bringing together several of October's major themes: faith, heritage, renewal, and a new season of congregational life. A taco lunch follows the service in celebration of Samuel's Confirmation, and Luther League gathers later that afternoon at Holy Trinity in Gastonia.

🐾🎃 Welcoming the Community

October's outreach culminates with Union's annual Fall Festival Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 30. The event offers a safe, family-friendly Halloween alternative and provides an opportunity for the congregation to welcome neighbors onto the church campus.

Members are invited to decorate trunks, donate individually wrapped candy and cakes, help with games and activities, grill hot dogs, assist with setup and cleanup, and pray for good weather, safety, and an atmosphere in which every visitor feels welcome. The event is expected to serve more than 100 children.

Earlier in the month, Union also hosts a Blessing of Domestic Animals, welcoming furry, feathered, and scaled companions to an outdoor service celebrating the joy and companionship animals bring to people's lives.

🕊️ Prayer, Remembrance & Life Together

The newsletter holds space for both celebration and grief. It includes a remembrance of Sarah Anne Barringer Bame, a longtime and deeply involved member of Union who served as an organist, choir member, handbell ringer, Sunday School teacher, circle member, and Good Timer. Her life of service and care for others—including her knitting and crocheting of items for those in need—is remembered with gratitude.

The congregation also extends sympathy to several families who have experienced loss, including the families of Sarah Bame, Charles Hartley, Nathan Bowman's grandmother Theresa Setzer, Janet Overcash's sister Donna Lanning, and Phoebe Nunn's brother Mike Taylor. Memorial gifts given in honor of loved ones support Union's General, Music, Organ, and Cemetery Funds.

Prayer remains woven throughout the congregation's life, with members in nursing homes, homebound members, those recovering from illness or surgery, families and friends facing hardship, first responders, missionaries, and communities affected by political unrest and natural disasters included in the church's continuing prayers.

October is ultimately a month of renewal and reconnection for Union Lutheran Church. The congregation enters a new season by returning to a renovated sanctuary, strengthening its ministries of worship and discipleship, gathering around fellowship and service, welcoming neighbors through community events, and preparing a new generation to live out its faith.

From the turning leaves of autumn to the dedication of a renewed worship space, October reminds Union that seasons change, but God's faithfulness remains.
