✨ Repentance, Mercy & the Road to the Cross — March at Union
Union Lutheran Church’s March 2026 newsletter invites the congregation deeper into the heart of Lent, centering on repentance and the healing gift Christ gives His Church through the Office of the Keys. In her Monthly Musings, Pastor Heidi Punt reflects on this often-overlooked section of Luther’s Catechism—situated between Baptism and Holy Communion—reminding the church that absolution is “the voice of the Gospel.” Repentance, she writes, is not self-improvement but the daily dying and rising of the believer, as Christ exposes sin and speaks forgiveness personally and powerfully “for you.”
Throughout March, Lent shapes both worship and life together. Bare branches replace flowers in the sanctuary, symbolizing spiritual emptiness awaiting Easter’s new life. Each Sunday, altar candles are gradually extinguished, marking humanity’s rejection of Christ, the Light of the World. A Lenten sermon series, “Crisis in Identity,” calls believers to move from performance and insecurity toward a grace-filled identity rooted in being beloved children of God.
🌿 Worship, Learning & Lenten RhythmMidweek Lenten meals and worship services gather the congregation for reflection and fellowship, while catechism continues its focus on reading through the Bible in a year. Sunday School for children, youth, and adults explores themes of rebuilding, repentance, vision, and welcome—from Nehemiah’s determination to the Triumphal Entry on Palm Sunday. Worship themes move steadily toward Holy Week, culminating on March 29 with Palm Sunday’s celebration of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem and the sermon “Holy Chaos,” preparing hearts for the final steps toward the cross.
🤝 Fellowship, Service & Shared MinistryMarch is filled with opportunities to live out repentance through tangible love of neighbor. Members serve at Chapel Time at Autumn Care, gather for congregational meals, support a home repair project for Billy Waller, and prepare church grounds for Holy Week. The Mission Outreach Team advances plans for the First Annual Cruise’n fundraiser, while the congregation hosts the Piedmont-East Clergy meeting. Youth and adults build community through line dancing, paintball, Luther League, and preparation for upcoming retreats and gatherings.
The month also highlights the Gerald Bame Memorial Scholarship, encouraging investment in the next generation, and continues support for Melanie Corn, Union’s sponsored seminarian. The featured benevolence focus, the North American Lutheran Seminary, reflects Union’s commitment to forming pastors and leaders grounded in Scripture and the Lutheran confessional tradition.
🕊️ Prayer, Governance & Congregational LifeMarch includes important moments of discernment and stewardship, including a called congregational meeting to review and vote on the 2026 Church Yearbook and Finance Team discussions regarding land sale proceeds. The Governance Board begins its quarterly review process under the new Constitution, strengthening shared leadership and transparency.
The newsletter also holds space for gratitude and remembrance—honoring memorial gifts, extending sympathy to the Honeycutt family, and surrounding members in prayer. From nursing homes to homebound members, from global missions to local first responders, the congregation is reminded that repentance leads outward into compassion and intercession.
As March unfolds, Union Lutheran Church walks the Lenten road together—honest about sin, bold about grace, and confident that through repentance and the Word of forgiveness, Christ continues to open heaven. With eyes fixed on the cross and hearts preparing for resurrection joy, the congregation journeys forward in mercy, hope, and steadfast faith.
