✝️ Worship, Resurrection & Receiving God's Gifts — April at Union

Union Lutheran Church’s April 2026 newsletter leads the congregation through Holy Week and Easter with a renewed focus on the heart of Lutheran worship: God coming to His people through Word and Sacrament. In her Monthly Musings, Pastor Heidi Punt reflects on childhood memories of worship and reminds readers that while styles, buildings, and generations may change, the essence of Christian worship remains the same. Lutheran worship, she writes, is not primarily about what believers do for God but about what God graciously gives through Christ—forgiveness, life, and salvation. Through Scripture, Holy Communion, prayer, music, and liturgy, God continues to meet His people and strengthen them for lives of faith and service.

🌅 As April unfolds, the congregation journeys from Palm Sunday through the cross to the empty tomb. Holy Week, Easter celebrations, worship opportunities, and congregational ministries all point to the central truth that Christ has conquered sin and death, offering hope and new life to all who believe.

🌿 Holy Week, Worship & the Joy of Easter

April centers on the dramatic events of Holy Week. Palm Sunday recalls Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, while Maundy Thursday commemorates the institution of Holy Communion and Christ’s final meal with His disciples. Good Friday invites believers to stand at the foot of the cross, reflecting on the depth of Christ’s sacrifice and the price of redemption.

A special Good Friday Prayer Vigil provides an opportunity for members to keep watch in prayer and meditation through the night, while youth gather for an overnight lock-in focused on the passion of Christ. These observances encourage the congregation to fully enter the solemnity of Christ’s suffering before celebrating the victory of Easter morning.

🌷 Easter Sunday bursts forth with resurrection joy through a sunrise service, fellowship breakfast, Easter egg hunt, choir music, and festive worship. Surrounded by flowers, hymns, and proclamation of the Gospel, the congregation celebrates the good news that death no longer has the final word because Christ is risen indeed. The Easter sermon, “On the Move,” proclaims the transforming power of the resurrection and the hope believers carry into the world.

📖 Learning, Discipleship & Growing in Faith

Christian education continues throughout April as children, youth, and adults explore Scripture through Sunday School, Bible study, and catechism. Lessons focus on themes of courage, obedience, the coming of the Holy Spirit, God’s care as the Good Shepherd, and faithful living in a challenging world. From Daniel’s friends in the fiery furnace to the events of Pentecost, participants are reminded that God remains present and faithful in every season of life.

Catechism students continue their journey through the Bible in a year, while a new eight-week Bible study on 1 and 2 Chronicles examines God’s covenant faithfulness, the Davidic line, and the importance of worship in the life of His people. The Carolinas Mission Region Youth Spring Retreat, themed “Faith in Action,” challenges youth and adults alike to put their faith into practice through service and discipleship.

🤝 Fellowship, Outreach & Community Life

April offers numerous opportunities for fellowship and outreach. The congregation gathers for a community meal, Chapel Time ministry at Autumn Care, line dancing evenings, Good Timers fellowship, and meetings of the Mary & Martha Circle. These ministries strengthen relationships within the congregation while extending Christ’s love to others in practical ways.

The Mission Outreach Team intensifies preparations for Union’s First Annual Cruise’n Fundraiser, encouraging members to volunteer, contribute resources, and invite the broader community to participate. The event reflects the congregation’s commitment to supporting youth missions and outreach while creating meaningful opportunities for connection and hospitality.

April’s benevolence emphasis on Lutheran Military Veterans & Families Ministries highlights the church’s care for veterans and military families. Members are invited to collect hygiene supplies, clothing, puzzles, and snacks for local veterans, demonstrating Christ’s compassion through tangible acts of service.

🏛️ Stewardship, Leadership & Preparing for the Future

The month includes several important leadership and planning initiatives. A called congregational meeting considers facility repairs and improvements funded through proceeds from a recent property sale. Projects include sanctuary maintenance, HVAC replacement, carpet installation, and preservation efforts designed to strengthen the church’s facilities for future ministry.

Church leaders continue meeting through council, governance, worship, outreach, and planning teams, carefully stewarding resources and preparing for future ministries, including discussions regarding an afterschool daycare program. Through these efforts, Union remains committed to its mission of being Christ-centered, mission-driven, traditionally grounded, and congregationally focused.

🕊️ Prayer, Remembrance & Caring for One Another

The newsletter also makes space for prayer, remembrance, and encouragement. Memorial gifts are received in honor of James “Red” Swicegood Sr. and Dorothy “Dot” Swicegood, while Christian sympathy is extended to Charles Hartley and family following the death of Becky Hartley. The congregation continues lifting up homebound members, nursing home residents, those recovering from illness, first responders, missionaries, and communities facing hardship around the world.

Through prayer and mutual care, Union demonstrates that the Church is more than a place of worship—it is a family united in Christ and called to bear one another’s burdens with compassion and faithfulness.

✨ Receiving God's Gifts & Living the Resurrection

As April unfolds, Union Lutheran Church journeys from palms to the cross and from the cross to the empty tomb. Through worship, learning, fellowship, and service, the congregation is reminded that God continues to meet His people with grace, forgiveness, and life through Jesus Christ.

Rooted in Word and Sacrament, strengthened by the resurrection, and sent into the world as witnesses of hope, Union moves forward with confidence that Christ has triumphed over sin and death. With grateful hearts and joyful voices, the congregation proclaims the Easter promise: Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! 🌿✝️🌅🕊️

Through worship, learning, generosity, and fellowship, the congregation lives out its mission:

“Christ Centered ~ Mission Driven ~ Traditionally Grounded ~ Congregationally Focused.”
